Mara's Homemade, a Manhattan favorite for Southern/Cajun fare and Arkansas barbecue, now has a new home in Syosset. The restaurant debuts tonight in the strip mall space last home to Bagel Boyz (and, before that, Sarge’s Delicatessen). For now, it's dinner only, with lunch kicking in after Father's Day.
Chef owner Mara Levi's menu features such items as crawfish "cheesecake " ($14), fried green tomatoes ($8), blackened redfish ($22) and Southern fried chicken ($16). From the smoker come ribs (St. Louis style, baby back or beef, $15-$25) and sandwiches such as chopped smoked brisket and pulled smoked pork ($10 each).
One could gain weight just reading items off the dessert roster: bananas Foster ($9), beignets ($6) and a “bluegrass” pie (pecan pie with Bourbon and chocolate, $7). Doesn't get more Southern than that.
The place is awaiting its liquor license. But you can still get freshly squeezed lemonade, homemade iced sweet tea and unsweetened fresh mint tea.
A considerate touch: Gluten-free and dairy-free items are asterisked.
Mara’s Homemade is at 236 Jericho Tpke., Syosset, 516-682-9200
