For the second straight year, Gerry Hayden of The North Fork Table & Inn in Southold has been named a semifinalist for best chef in the northeast in the James Beard Foundation Awards competition.
Last year, Hayden made it to the finals, but lost to Tony Maws of Craigie on Main In Cambridge, Mass. His selection as a semifinalist is the lone Long Island representation in the 2012 awards. The North Fork Table & Inn earned four stars, the highest rating, in Newsday.
There are 20 semifinalists in each of the JBF restaurant and chef award categories. Five finalists will be chosen from the list by a panel of more than 550 judges. The semifinalists were picked from 57,000 online entries.
Final nominees will be announced on March 19 at The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas. The awards ceremony is slated for May 7 at Lincoln Center.
The awards honor professionals in the food and beverage business. The foundation also presents awards for cookbooks, food journalism and culinary broadcast programs. The awards started in 1990.
