The Square, Keith Luce’s ambitious, multi-venue culinary venture at Stirling Square in Greenport, has closed. Main, the restaurant that anchored the complex, was open last weekend for Shellabration, Greenport’s two-day mollusk festival. On Monday, however, the restaurant’s executive chef, Greg Ling, received an email from Luce saying that Main was closed indefinitely. (The other venues had already closed for the season.)
An automatic reply from Luce’s email account said that the chef was traveling for business overseas and was unable to reply to inquiries.
Luce, an award-winning chef who had cooked at the Clinton White House and won accolades on the West Coast, returned to his native North Fork in 2010 to join Jedediah Hawkins Inn in Jamesport as chef-partner. The restaurant he created there, Luce & Hawkins, earned 3½ stars from Newsday. Luce left the inn in late 2012.
In the spring of 2013, Luce and partners took over four spaces in Stirling Square and transformed them into Main, a seafood-centric restaurant; Nosh, a casual cafe; Meet, a wine-and-beer bar that was also a performance space; and Prep, an open kitchen that produced baked goods and cured meats for the whole complex. Main earned 2 stars from Newsday.
