Venue 56, named for its LIE exit in Hauppauge, has a new owner, John Peratto, who renamed the restaurant for his daughter, Janine.
Venue 56 opened about a year ago and earned 2½ stars from Newsday's Peter Gianotti when Marc Bynum was in the kitchen. Byum left in June (he went on to be a finalist on Food Network’s “Chopped Champions” and he’s now at Deli Boss in Roslyn) and the kitchen was left in the hands of Rodolfo Flores.
Janine’s chef is Chris Kocaj, most recently at Once Upon a Moose in Sea Cliff (now Olives). His menu features familiar dishes in a number of popular styles: Italian-American (clams casino, shrimp Parmesan), New American (pan-roasted tilapia, roasted half chicken), Asian-fusion (sweet and sour shrimp, tuna spring roll) and steak house (filet mignon, New York strip). At dinner main courses hover around $20. At lunch, they’re closer to $12, with most sandwiches and burgers under $10.
Janine’s is at 470 Wheeler Rd., Hauppauge, 631-761-5602.
