When you're hankering for a great bowl of soup, a Mexican restaurant may not be the first source that pops into your mind.

Perhaps, though, it should be.

Need proof? Here are three Mexican eateries that can serve you a bowlful of hearty, homey satisfaction.

CHICHIMECAS

Chef-owner Alejandro González offers a homey pozole, or pork and hominy soup, that's guaranteed to chase the chills away. It's served with a tostada on the side ($4.95 small; $9.50 large).

EL RANCHITO MEXICAN GRILL

At this sliver of a Mexican restaurant, you'll find a spicy chicken soup laced with cilantro and revved up with hot red chiles ($7.95).

66 Larkfield Rd., East Northport, 631-262-9704

LA FONDITA

The tortilla soup at this colorful taco stand (open Wednesday to Sunday) features a savory tomato- enriched chicken broth laced with tortillas and topped with crema, avocado and Mexican cheese ($4.25 small; $8.50 large).

TAQUERIA CIELITO LINDO

The posole rojo is a hearty soup with pork and hominy.  Taqueria Cielito Lindo, in Riverhead, is known for its homemade soft corn tortillas, savory pozole rojo and Cuban tortas.
