I got a few nice culinary surprises at the new Hunter’s Grill, which is stalking success in the former Glen Cove digs of Big Apple BBQ. Owners Dennis Mavashev and Reginald Chaimov, who were involved in the site's previous incarnation, seem headed in a better direction.
An appetizer called "Eastern BBQ lamb spare ribs" featured two hefty, meaty ribs glazed with what the menu described as a “mild Iranian sweet and spicy sauce.” I couldn’t stop licking my fingers. Sharing the plate were multicolored peppers and shredded carrots, everything imbued with exotic flavor.
A big juicy “West End” burger, topped with pulled pork, caramelized onions, BBQ sauce and American cheese proved irresistible – even if the cheese wasn’t totally melted.
What needed improvement: Dry reheated bbq chicken drowning in too-thick bbq sauce.
