The clash of cones is over. After two weeks of voting, the results are in, and Ice Cream Cottage of Mastic vanquished 31 rivals to win Newsday’s Ice Cream Smackdown.

John Pastore, who opened Ice Cream Cottage 26 years ago, said that he was overwhelmed.

“Over the years,” he said, “you hear nice comments from your customers, you read your Yelp reviews. But the response we got for this contest — it was just amazing. Every one of the 32 other owners know how hard it is running an ice cream store. It’s great to know you’re not working in vain."

Since the Smackdown launched on June 22, almost 100,000 people voted online for their favorite ice cream shop.

The field was made up of 32 independently owned Long Island ice cream shops — no chains — and up until the last round, Nassau and Suffolk competed independently. Congratulations to Nassau’s winner, the runner-up: Sweet Treats on the Wharf in Port Washington. And congratulations to all the competitors — they make Long Island summers truly sweet.
