Italian restaurant Casa Mia opens in Hauppauge

Casa Mia has opened in Hauppauge, in the free-standing building next to Pace’s Steakhouse that used to be the wine and tapas bar Blend. Blend was owned by Pace’s; Casa Mia is owned by first-time restaurateurs Alexandra Plevritis and Michelle Thornton. Plevritis, a diner veteran, comes from a long line of restaurant and diner owners; she most recently worked as a hostess at Prime in Huntington.

Casa Mia’s chef is Michael Heinlein, formerly of The Grill in Hauppauge, the Twisted Vine in Huntington and the Graceful Rose in Port Jefferson. His menu blends Italian, Greek and New American influences, with starters ($12 to $18) such as warm octopus salad with cannellini-bean puree, roasted Portobello mushroom with melted Gorgonzola and balsamic glaze, grilled lamb sausage with cucumber-dill yogurt and braised Kobe meatballs with tomato sauce and ricotta. Mains ($23 to $42) include grilled whole fish with lemon-herb potatoes, roasted salmon with couscous pilaf and Dalmatian fig sauce, whole-wheat penne primavera, braised pork osso buco with roasted-vegetable orzo and a grilled filet mignon with Parmesan mashed potatoes.
