For a long time now, Jackson’s in Commack has offered a three-course $24.95 prix fixe all day every day. What's changed recently is that instead of getting a few choices, diners now have the entire menu to choose from.

Select an appetizer — portions are sized for one instead of two, as they are a la carte. Then, choose any entree, burger (with 3 toppings), sandwich or main dish salad. Portions are regular size and surcharges apply only to steak and tuna. Finally, choose among a substantial array of desserts.

How does this benefit the restaurant? “It’s increased our check average because many people were just getting burgers,” said co-owner Shelby Poole, whose husband, Harry, is the chef. “Now, people can get what we’re known for and not have to choose from a limited menu or feel cheaped out,” Poole added.

I had occasion to dine there recently and was truly  impressed by the Thai chicken lettuce wrap appetizer, made with wok-seared vegetables and cucumber salad. The dish, on its way to becoming a cliche at Asian-fusion restaurants, was about as vibrant a version as I can remember. A companion's pecan-crusted chicken was crunchy and moist. While my cedar planked salmon lacked the smoky quality I recall from a past visit, it was still pretty good, although I had to send the first overcooked version back.

One dessert standout was sliced Merlot-poached pear with chocolate ice cream, dried cranberries and candied pecans topped with house-made whipped cream. Another was a first-rate chocolate milk shake.

A lot of food for the price.
