If you’re craving Jamaican dishes — seasoned with allspice and spiked with Scotch bonnets — the new Soursop Tree Cafe in Montauk may be the place for you. Jamaican-born Clive Walker is the chef, formerly running the kitchen for 20 years at Shagwong Tavern in Montauk before it closed last summer.
Soursop Tree Cafe is situated above Plaza Sports in what had been Wok ’N Roll on a second level, with a handful of tables and seats indoors and out on a balcony.
The menu features jerk, curried, stewed or fried chicken at $15 to $21, and jerk pork with sweet potato pancakes for $23. Fish dishes include the ceviche-style escovitch, as well as “you hook ’em, we cook ’em” — a carry-over from Wok ’N Roll — that starts at $10.
A straightforward, beer-battered fish and chips costs $21. Stewed peas with pigtails are available weekends from $8 to $15.
This is the second location of Soursop Tree Cafe, with the original in Jamaica, Queens, run by Walker’s cousin and business partner, Conrad Bennett. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.
