Kannoli Kings, known for its dessert truck and mail-order business, is slated to open its first shop on March 4, and in so doing will become Long Island’s first cannoli specialist.
Owner Sal Lo Piccolo’s tribute to the classic Sicilian pastry comes in many forms, from sweet to savory, as if the shell is a starting point from which to tweak tradition.
His creations include cannoli with barbecued chicken, bacon-and-Cheddar mashed potato, mango salsa, and, as if to underscore the inspiration from Sicily, a cannolo with caponata of eggplant.
The sweet cannoli take in the original cream variety, French vanilla, Reese’s peanut butter, candy bacon and chocolate raspberry. The shells also are gilded with toppings such as coconut and cinnamon.
The cannoli are $4 to $6.
Lo Piccolo said the new store will be open Thursday to Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 8 or 9 p.m., “depending on the traffic.” He’s looking ahead to franchising, too.
Kannoli Kings is at 830 N. Broadway, Massapequa; 845-444-6146, kannolikings.com
