Newsday All-star chef Keith Luce has left  Luce & Hawkins, the highly regarded restaurant at Jedediah Hawkins Inn in Jamesport, according to his Facebook page and several North Fork restaurant sources.

Luce, who was executive chef and a partner at the restaurant and inn, would not comment on his job status. Lia Polites, the property’s principal owner, could not be reached.  According to the Edible blog, an online feature of the magazine Edible East End, Luce’s replacement will be Alex Algieri, most recently the chef at North Fork Oyster Company in Greenport. Algieri could not be reached for comment.

The stately, Victorian Jedediah Hawkins Inn opened in 2006 and its restaurant was run by three successive chefs (the first, Tom Schaudel, left in late 2008) until Luce took over in early 2010. A 1987 graduate of Riverhead High School whose family’s North Fork roots go back 300 years, Luce cooked at the Clinton White House before serving as executive chef at the Little Nell in Aspen, PlumpJack Café in San Francisco and the Herbfarm in Woodinville, Wash. In 2010, Luce received a  3½ star review from Newsday critic Peter M. Gianotti and, later that year, was named a Newsday All-Star chef.

Luce was lavish in his use of local fish and produce. Many of the restaurants eggs and herbs were raised right there on the inn’s property.

Luce & Hawkins is at 400 S. Jamesport Ave. Jamesport, 631-722-2900.
