LI's 10 best traditional Chinese restaurants

The Orient in Bethpage has standouts that include shrimp with walnuts in mayonnaise sauce, crunchy fried chicken and the green vegetable of the moment. On weekend mornings, sample the fine dim sum. (Pictured: clams with black bean sauce.) Credit: Newsday / Rebecca Cooney

Cumin lamb. Soup dumplings. Shrimp with their heads still on. This is real Chinese food -- and it's a long way from egg roll, fried rice and General Tso's chicken.

You'll find this kind of authenticity at only a handful of Long Island restaurants, many of which can also offer you the old suburban favorites, such as chow fun and beef with broccoli.

Perhaps, though, it's time to bypass the familiar and get a true taste of China. We give you nine places to start, that will be sure to leave a lasting impression.
