Given the devastation that Superstorm Sandy has wrought on Long Beach, it’s a miracle that so many restaurants have reopened and are continuing to restart operations.
The following list is a rundown of confirmed openings to date. Expect it to grow. Not surprisingly, all but one of the open restaurants are on East and West Park Avenue. Restaurants on the hardest-hit west end of town have a longer road ahead.
Beach House, 906 West Beech Str., Long Beach, 516-208-8733. This casual sports bar appears to be the first of the West End restaurants to open — all its kitchen and refrigeration was on the second floor. Although not yet operating with its full menu, the place will be open this week on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, serving a 26-item roster that includes mac and cheese, chicken and steak tidbits, burgers, fish and chips and panini.
Lola's Kitchen & Wine Bar, 180 W. Park Ave., Long Beach, 516-442-1090. Upbeat New American bistro reopened last Friday tonight with full menu.
Lido Kosher Deli, 641-1/2 East Park Ave., Long Beach, 516-431-4411. After hard times, there’s nothing like chicken soup with matzo balls and hot pastrami.
Laurel Luncheonette, 300 West Park Ave., Long Beach, 516-432-7728. Around since the 1930s and still serving up eggs, burgers and BLTs.
Gino's Restaurant & Pizzeria, 16 West Park Ave., Long Beach, 516-432-8193. This longtime Long Beach favorite for pizza and pasta is offering 50 percent off its entire menu through Sunday.
Five Guys, 2-4 W. Park Ave., Long Beach, 516-431-1999. Good burgers; great hand-cut fries.
Sugo Cafe, 62 West Park Ave., Long Beach, 516-431-7846. Alan Adams, owner of this eclectic Italian spot, says he's up and serving his regular menu.
Abe's Pitaria, 32 W. Park Ave., Long Beach, 516-897-3582. Gyros, souvlaki sandwiches, Greek salads and more.
John Henry’s American Pub, 150 East Park Ave., Long Beach, 516-897-9551. German specialties and American pub classics are the order at this casual spot.
The Bungalow, 669 East Park Ave., Long Beach, 516-632-2501. Smoothies, shakes, panini and more in a tiki bar-like setting.
