The Vine, Merrick’s comfortable, low-key wine bar, has added a lunch menu, which three of us tried earlier this week. We enjoyed everything; our “issues” were those of nomenclature: a grilled-cheese sandwich that was pressed rather than grilled — and thus lacked that grease-soaked crunch that is the secret reason one orders a grilled cheese in the first place; a Cobb salad that, while described as “classic,” contained no chicken unless special-ordered for an additional $2.
About that bird-free Cobb, it was perfectly coated with a lemon-Dijon dressing and I even liked the unorthodox inclusion of baby spinach. An iceberg wedge with blue-cheese dressing was unimpeachable, if a little skimpy on the bacon.
The “grilled” cheese — you can pick one to three of seven offered cheeses — was tasty, if a little wet from the slice of tomato. We preferred No. 5 from the list of pressed sandwiches, a classic layering of arugula, mozzarella and prosciutto. Hard to beat that. Also hard to beat: Everything on the lunch menu hovers around $11.
At night, there’s always something interesting going on at The Vine: music, tastings, half-price bottles, frozen wine drinks. Here are some upcoming events.
The Vine Wine Bar is at 2259 Merrick Rd., Merrick, 516-812-7883.
