North Fork Foodie Tour returns

One of the North Fork’s signature events returns for its eighth year on Sunday: the 2014 Foodie Tour, sponsored by North Fork Reform Synagogue.

Tickets are required, but the tour is self guided, taking visitors to more than a dozen farms and vineyards and affording them the opportunity to meet artisans and chefs who turn the region's agricultural bounty into some of Long Island’s most celebrated foods.

New this year: Long Island Mushroom Farm in Cutchogue will be open all day long, allowing visitors to see how shiitake, oyster and maitake mushrooms are cultivated. Or tour Surrey Lane Vineyards (formerly Ackerly Pond), a 44-acre farm raising not only grapes, but apples, apricots, peaches, nectarines, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and a wide variety of vegetables. Greenport Harbor Brewery will also be offering tours (and tastings) at its new Peconic branch.

Returning favorites include Browder’s Birds, the chicken farm that now boasts Long Island’s only mobile poultry processing facility; Sang Lee Farms in Peconic, specializing in exotic organic vegetables; Koppert Cress, the vast micro-vegetable greenhouse operation in Cutchogue that normally is not open to visitors; Ty Llwd Farm in Jamesport, Long Island’s only certified raw-milk dairy farm; and The Farm in Southold, a biodynamic farm presided over by Long Island’s “tomato whisperer,” KK Haspel.

Tour headquarters is at the Peconic Land Trust’s Agricultural Center at Charnews Farm in Southold. Throughout the day talks will be given by Deborah Pittorino, chef at Cuvee Seafood and Grill at the Greenporter Hotel; Andy Lowry, from Southold Program in Aquaculture (SPAT), which is restoring oysters to Peconic Bay; and chef-author John Ross, “the father of North Fork cuisine.”

The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7. Tickets can be purchased in advance by clicking here or at Gallery M in Greenport, Complement the Chef in Southold, Bookhampton in Mattituck, or Barth’s Drugstore in Riverhead. On the day of the tour, tickets can be bought at Charnews Farm (3005 Youngs Ave., Southold) after 9 a.m. and at any stop on the tour after 10 a.m. The cost is $25 per person; children younger than 12 tour for free.
