North Fork's Gerry Hayden makes the cut for best chef

Gerry Hayden, chef at The North Fork Table & Inn in Southold, is a finalist for best chef in the northeast in this year's James Beard Foundation Awards.

He'll be competing with five other chefs, all from New England. The JBF Award winners will be announced May 9 at the annual ceremony, held at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center.  Finalists in 55 categories were announced today.

The North Fork Table & Inn holds a four-star rating in Newsday. The restaurant is at 57225 Main Rd. (Route 15), Southold; 631-765-0177.

Hayden's competitors are Tim Cushman of o ya in Boston; Matt Jennings of La Laiterie in Providence, R.I.; Krista Kern Desjarlais of  Bresca in Portland, Me.; Tony Maws of Craigie on Main in Cambridge, Mass.;  and Eric Warnstedt of Hen of the Wood in Waterbury, Vt.

From Manhattan, restaurants Per Se and La Grenouille are finalists for outstanding service; The Modern, for wine service;  Blue Hill and Eleven Madison Park for outstanding restaurant nationally; Angela Pinkerton of Eleven Madison Park, outstanding pastry chef;, and Christina Tosi of Momofuku Milk Bar for rising chef.
