The day the world was supposed to have ended, I decided to order a hot fudge sundae at Northport Sweet Shop. This, following a pretty good fried chicken cutlet sandwich and a bite of a friend's turkey burger -- savory, smoky, but a bit too finely ground.
A local landmark since 1929, this old fashioned parlor makes its ice cream in-house. I opted for three scoops (okay, I shared the sundae): pistachio (studded with lots of nuts), maple walnut (tasting equally of maple syrup and walnuts) and chocolate (much deeper in flavor than remembered from years ago). Divine hot fudge.
The sin of the century? Aerosol whipped cream. Had the cream been freshly whipped, I might, indeed, have felt as though I'd died and gone to heaven.
Northport Sweet Shop is at 55 Main St., Northport, 631-261-3748.
