Having eight bars in close proximity is a fine thing, particularly if you like bar crawls, and Wantagh is crawling with them of late. The latest, an Oktoberfest-themed event happening Saturday, is the brainchild of Tim Murray of Mulcahy’s, and given the state of international travel, it may well offer Islanders the next best thing to beer-soaked Bavaria.

"Our post-Christmas bar crawl on Dec. 26 has been going so well for some many years that I thought let’s try to do another one," said Murray, the bar’s promotions director. Mulcahy’s also had success with its Tacos + Tequila festival, a daylong affair that squeaked in under the pandemic wire in Feb. 2020, and plans a second installment next year over Presidents Day weekend.

Back to Saturday. Seven other bars have signed on to the promotion event — Boss Croker’s, Craft Kitchen, Bunker Hill, The Irish Poet, Wantagh Inn, Ridgewood Station Tavern, and Corry’s Ale House — and all will be offering German beer and/or food. The fare at Craft, for instance, will include knackwurst and Gruyere sliders on brioche buns ($14) and a Wiener schnitzel sandwich with fries ($17), along with such beers as Warsteiner Oktoberfest and Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier. Mulcahy’s will feature Hofbrau Oktoberfest and other German suds, plus bratwurst with sauerkraut ($9.95), Jägerschnitzel with brown mushroom gravy ($18.95), and more.

"Mulcahy’s and the other bars aren’t generally busy on Saturday afternoons, so they figured, why not?" said Murray, adding that his establishment (and possibly others) would have live music. And while German attire is strongly encouraged, it is not required, he said, perhaps owing to the difficulty of crawling in lederhosen.

The first annual Oktoberfest Wantagh Bar Crawl begins at noon on Saturday. Details at or call 516-783-7500.
