Oktoberfest is starting at Long Island restaurants, as the first ’fest beer barrel is tapped in Munich on Saturday Sept. 21. Here are some of the local celebrants:

The White Whale in Seaford celebrates Oktoberfest year-round, with Wiener schnitzel, Wiener rostbraten and potato pancakes; and, as specials, sauerbraten and wursts. During September and October, the seasonal specials include marinated herring, beef roulade with spaetzle, and homemade apple strudel. (3580 Bayview St., Seaford, 516-785-1067,

Rowdy Hall in East Hampton becomes a beer garden with courtyard picnic tables and communal benches inside at an Oktoberfest festival on Saturday Sept. 21 from 3to 5 p.m. Expect fresh baked pretzels, wurst platters, Bavarian music. The restaurant will have Oktoberfest specials with fixed-price dinners Saturday to Wednesday (wursts), Sept. 26 to 29 (smoked pork chops), Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 (Wiener schnitzel), and Oct. 3 to 6 (sauerbraten). The Riverhead Project in Riverhead presents an Oktoberfest beer dinner on Oct. 2. The $40 dinner will feature Weihenstephaner beer, charcuterie, spaetzle with wild mushrooms, pretzel-crusted chicken with beer-braised cabbage, and Black Forest torte. (300 E. Main St., Riverhead; 631-284-9300,

Library Café in Farmingdale will host a $35, four-course Oktoberfestbeer dinner on Sept. 24 featuring Bavarian pretzel fondue, potato soup, wursts or jaeger schnitzel, and apple strudel. The cafe will offer a special ’fest menu from Wednesday to Oct. 1 that includes the fondue, German potato soup and potato pancakes, a wurst platter, jaeger schnitzel and apple strudel. Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square hosts Ompahfest & Schuetzenfest in its biergarten on Sept. 22, with food, brews, German bands, raffles and prizes; and shooting at the rifle range in the new beer hall. Maxwell’s in Islip goes festive Oct. 2-5 with beer specials, sauerbraten sliders on pretzel rolls, Bavarian pretzel bites with ale-and-Cheddar dip and mustard, a beer-glazed bratwurst sandwich, Wiener schnitzel, a wurst platter, stewed German beef and bratwurst with potatoes and carrots in a light broth with spaetzle, and apple strudel with vanilla ice cream.
