Pico Tequila Grill is turning out tacos, burritos, salads and quesadillas in the Bay Shore space that last housed Smokin’ Al’s Famous BBQ Joint.

Executive chef co-owner John Pellegrino is also a partner at Jackson Hall American Bar & Grill in East Islip and was an owner of the former Red Dish in Commack and Sundried Tomato Cafe in Nesconset. Joining him in the open kitchen is Jorge Lopez, who hails from Mexico. Aiming for authenticity, the two make their own tortillas and work with about 20 different peppers.

Items on the opening menu include a pork carnitas taco ($3.50), ahi tuna tostadas ($10.95), pineapple and pork quesadillas ($8.95) and a crispy fish burrito ($8.95).  Pellegrino said the menu will be expanded over the next few months.

The place features over 50 tequilas and, on tap, Jose Cuervo tequila and 14 beers.

Pellegrino described the casual-looking interior as featuring century-old barn wood from the East End, along with a lot of brick work.

Pico Tequila Grill is at 17 W. Main St., Bay Shore, 631-647-8907.
