On a sunny afternoon, shaded by an umbrella, I had a leisurely lunch in the courtyard of Jo Jo Apples Too, a recent offshoot of the Point Lookout original. The restaurant occupies the historic Coles house, which, not long ago, was home to GLYhop. And a pleasant site it is.
Having had a dynamite version of Jo Jo Apples' spicy corn frittata last year at the Point Lookout locale, I ordered the same dish: a baked open face omelet made with corn, tomatoes, scallions, chopped jalapeño peppers, Pepperjack cheese and fresh cilantro. An occasional burst of hot pepper was the only flavor that came across in this disconcertingly bland (but very pretty) version. A fresh and attractive Cobb salad would have been ideal had not the strips of grilled chicken been dry and cold as wood. Grilling boneless chicken breasts properly and to order, it seems, is on its way to becoming a lost art.
Jo Jo Apples Too is at 49 Glen St, Glen Cove, 516-277-2023. The original Jo Jo Apples is at 85 Lido Blvd., Point Lookout, 516-432-6494, jojoapples.com.
