Spring is in the air, and Asian bistros are blooming all over Long Island.
Somebody's got to feed what looks like an insatiable appetite for fancy sushi rolls, Malaysian red curry and General Tso’s chicken.
Enter Kanda Asian Bistro & Sushi Bar, which takes over the Bellmore spot vacated by Shang Hai Pavilion II. The place looks a lot more contemporary than its predecessor and, of course, now has a sushi bar.
At lunch, a friend and I shared a perfectly respectable dragon roll (eel with cucumber, avocado and tobiko). One midday special, chirashi ($12), was attractive, if somewhat small, done with fresh salmon, tuna, white tuna and mackerel (a “deluxe” version at dinner goes for $18). My pal’s bento box ($9) starred katsu (breaded pork) with shu mai, rice and a California roll and was competently done, if not particularly exciting. Service was sweet and solicitous.
Some items on the dinner menu: yellowtail seviche ($9), kung pao chicken ($10.95), jumbo shrimp with Indonesian sambal sauce ($14.95) and ginger duck ($20).
Kanda Asian Bistro & Sushi Bar is at 2725 Merrick Rd., Bellmore, 516-221-2332.
