The Black Wolf has taken over the Syosset den last occupied by Mitch O’Neill’s. It's a handsome little tavern and sports bar with a simple, pub-style menu.
On a recent afternoon, a friend and I tried a few items from that menu. It turned out to be a mixed experience.
I liked the juicy little Angus sliders, which we had topped with bacon, Cheddar, caramelized onions and guacamole (loose-textured and oddly tangy). That guacamole made a surprise appearance in the unorthodox Cobb salad, which was supposed to harbor sliced avocado (“Guacamole is made with avocado,” our waitress informed us.) and also included overcooked strips of chicken and leathery steak, bacon and hard boiled egg. A Cajun chicken wrap, although not the dish my friend had ordered, proved colorful and satisfying. The shrimp wrap that she had asked for was another story – a dry, cracked tortilla enfolding very few tiny shrimp, iceberg and watery tomato.
