Making its Port Washington debut at noon on Friday is Rosso Uptown, an artisanal pizzeria and restaurant, the spinoff of Pepe Rosso 24 in the Manorhaven section of Port Washington.
Co-owner Michael Tizzano said that the transformation of the space that once housed Amigos Mexican Restaurant took more than a year. He described a “rustic and inviting” environment with two pizza ovens, one wood-fired, the other gas-fueled. The restaurant’s pizzaiolo, Tonino Cardoglia, used to be at King Umberto in Elmont.
Here, said Tizzano, pizzas are made from premium ingredients, like DOP San Marzano tomatoes, and much of the pasta served — like fusilli, paccheri and gnocchi — is made on premises.
On the menu: a 12-inch artisanal Margherita brick oven pie ($13.95), a Sicilian pizza, made in the gas-fired oven ($16), jicama salad ($9.95), polpette bella Napoli, or meatballs baked with peppers, onions, tomato sauce and mozzarella, served with crostini ($10.95) fusilli al pesto ($15.95), chicken Francese ($16.95) and, from Tizzano’s mother’s recipe, the chocolate almond tart known as torta Caprese ($7.95).
