P.J. Clarke’s in Woodbury has closed. The franchise operation, owned independently from the legendary P.J. Clarke’s saloon in Manhattan, lasted barely a year in the location that for the prior 20 years had housed Majors Steakhouse.
The distinctive building on Jericho Turnpike just east of Woodbury Road already has a new name and concept, Honig Grill, although it is still owned by Brian Galligan and Steven Raia, who also operate Il Mulino in Roslyn.
Honig Grill takes its name from a Napa Valley winery known for its cabernet sauvignon. Honig winery has no financial stake in the restaurant, but its wines figure promininently on the California-heavy wine list.
Michael Honig, president of the winery, said that the restaurant’s owners were “big fans of my family’s wines. They wanted to create a restaurant with a Napa theme and use our name as a brand. ”
Honig Grill’s menu is California-inflected New American, with entrees including pan-seared branzino sauteed in Honig Sauvignon Blanc and lemon-caper sauce, and grilled chicken paillard with arugula, tomato, red onion and shaved Parmesan. There are also steaks and chops, a sushi bar and a raw bar.
The new menu is in place, but some renovation and redecoration will be performed over the next month or so. The restaurant will remain open during that time.
