Finding places on that stretch of Jericho Turnpike between Route 110 in Huntington and Sunken Meadow Parkway in Commack has always been a challenge for me. Driving West to East, once I pass Forest Pork Store (or, more commonly, once I stop at Forest Pork Store), it’s just a repeating loop of strip malls and car dealerships.
So I was gratified this morning to recall the location of Desi Bazar, on the North side of Jericho between Porsche of Huntington and Habberstad BMW. This Pakistani grocery has a kitchen, grill and tandoori oven on the premises and is a terrific source for takeout.
From the dozen or so choices, I asked the gentleman behind the counter for braised okra with tomatoes and onions; spinach and potatoes; and a chicken seekh kebab (spiced, ground chicken), all served on top of a generous bed of brown basmati rice. Enough for two, this cost $9.50. When I was paying, I noticed two trays of freshly made samosas (fried dough pockets, $1 apiece). The gentleman told me I would not regret buying one. I bought two, both delicious, no regrets.
Desi Bazar is at 905 Jericho Tpke., Huntington Station, 631-385-4740.
