Peconic Bay scallops, delicate and delicious, are starting to appear at local seafood markets and restaurants.

Retail, the tasty shellfish are $17 per pound at Southold Fish Market. They should be more widely available soon, competing with the Nantuckets.  Last year was bountiful for scallopers on the East End, with the largest catch since brown tide wiped out the shellfish in 1985. The season began Monday.

Expect to see and taste them imminently on local menus, especially on the North and South Forks. They're at their sweet, slightly nutty best with minimal intervention. A simple saute will do.
