For the first time ever, Newsday has ranked the Top 10 pizzas on Long Island. Our list may make you angry. Very angry. Long Islanders are slavishly devoted to their favorite pies. And, naturally, everyone wants to see theirs celebrated and given its due. Believe me, I agonized over every crust, every San Marzano tomato, every shred of basil I consumed.
In my long career of eating pizza, I have observed that, for most people, the best pizza is often found within a five-mile radius of home or work. Thankfully, Long Island teems with excellent neighborhood pizzerias.
But be forewarned that the Top 10 list, which you'll find on our website Wednesday night and in the Food Section of ExploreLI on Thursday, is focused on what I’m calling “destination” pizzas, artisan pies that are designed to be ordered whole. Each is worth the drive.
Of course I don't want my list to be responsible for any canceled subscriptions, so we’re compiling an on-line “Long Island Pizza Hall of Fame,” composed of readers’ favorites. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to nominate your Best. Pie. Ever. or -- even easier -- post in the comments section below. In addition to the restaurant's name, please include town and a sentence or two about what makes its pies remarkable.
