If you’re out late — very late — and are in dire need of a slice, Za in Wantagh is serving a small late-night menu until 4 a.m. Monday-Saturday. That is, if you can find the place.
You won’t see any giant “Za” sign flashing anywhere (in fact, there is no sign indicating its presence during the day at all), while at night the only overt advertising is a thigh-high sidewalk sign that is barely visible from the road. The reason for this: Za is really just an extension of Cherrywood Pizza, a local parlor that offers various pies and Italian dishes daily until 10 p.m.
At which point the mood gets a little darker as many of the house lights are turned down, while speakers blare rock music outside. As for the aforementioned special list of edibles, pizza is available by the slice or pie. There are also chicken-Parmesan “chickentino” rolls and chocolate zeppoles to grab (while supplies last). If you happen to live in the neighboring area Za will deliver, also until 4 a.m.
Watch for experiments on various evenings; a “spicy chicken” pie has already made a guest appearance. Expect a busy room too, filled with Wantagh teens. Za also happens to be "in a “nightlife nexus” of sorts — and the parlor receives hungry patrons arriving from the many bars that are nearby (Guido’s Irish Pub, RP McMurphy's, Boss Crokers, Corry’s Ale House, Cleary’s Bar and Cafe and the legendary Mulcahy’s of Wantagh are all within walking distance) with great frequency.
Za is at 919 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh, 516-826-3077.
