Plancha Tapas and Wine Bar is newly uncorked in the Garden City space that last housed Upper Crust Cafe. The place is under the same ownership as Salumi in Massapequa.
Co-owner Joshua Kobrin said that plancha is the Spanish word for a big flat-top steel grill. Just such a grill is situated behind the bar and turns out many of the dishes on the menu of chef Giuseppe Agostino, former sous chef at Salumi.
In addition to cured meats and cheeses, offered separately or in combinations, Plancha's menu offers such tapas selections as ham croquettas ($7), duck sausage ($7), seviche ($8) and pork belly bocadillo ($8). At lunch, there are sandwiches, such as cold salmon with endive ($8) and a sopressata panino ($7) as well as salads, like the Spanish Cobb ($9) and a beet and endive salad ($8). At Saturday and Sunday brunch, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., there are tostadas (here, similar to English muffins) grilled on the plancha and served with such choices as Serrano ham, mascarpone and quince paste (3 for $9; 5 for $14). Then, there's the Garden City duck ($10), a big sunny-side-up duck egg over lightly dressed arugula.
