After a little more than a year, one of Long Island’s most ambitious specialty shops, Red Maple Market, has closed.

Charlie Mastropaolo, who owned the Roslyn market with his wife, Jenn, said that lunch was strong, but the market couldn’t make it without a comparable dinner crowd. “We’re not certain if we will remain in this space or relocate locally,” he said.

Red Maple opened in October 2015 in the swanky Northern Boulevard strip mall, just west of the viaduct, where The Meat House was from 2012 to 2014. Initially, it had one of Nassau county’s best cheese departments, a full-service butcher counter, house-made charcuterie and shelves carrying such rare provisions as Ample Hills ice cream.

Shortly after it opened, cheesemonger Jessica Affatato’s artful cheese platter was featured in a Newsday story about specialty markets that excel in holiday catering.

But it didn’t take long for the Mastropaolos to learn that their customers were more interested in takeout than in cooking and entertaining, and the product mix changed accordingly. (Affatato decamped for the Village Cheese Shop in Mattituck.)

We’ll miss the fried chicken and Cuban sandwiches, and keep you posted on any further developments.
