Riverhead sighting: Charles Barkley @ Jerry & the Mermaid

FILE - in this Aug. 13, 2010 file photo, Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Charles Barkley, representing the 1992 USA Olympic "Dream" Team, pats his heart as he speaks during the enshrinement news conference at the Hall of Fame Museum in Springfield, Mass. One result of the NCAA's new deal with CBS and Turner Sports to televise the men's basketball tournament is that TNT NBA announcers such as Charles Barkley will be now analyzing college games. Basketball legend and media personality Charles Barkley must be a huge fan of Jerry & the Mermaid in Riverhead. Last weekend, the former NBA star hit the restaurant three days in a row -- Friday, Saturday and Sunday night -- while participating in a nearby golf outing.

Restaurateur Jerry Dicecco said Barkley couldn’t have been nicer. Not only did he shake hands with other customers and pose for photos, but he got into some heavy-duty karaoke. To catch his performance, click here.

Now for the food report: The first night, according to Dicecco, Barkley had a combination seafood appetizer platter followed by linguine with clam sauce. The next, he had a broiled fish combination. The last night, when he stopped by to catch a basketball game on TV, he indulged in Buffalo-style shrimp and wings. Before leaving, Barkley had a big piece of pecan pie. A la mode, of course.

Jerry & the Mermaid is at 469 E. Main St, Riverhead; 631-727-8489.
