Last week, I stopped into Roast Sandwich House, the amazing little Melville spot where chef-owners Joe Cordaro and Matthew Doyle turn out an inventive repertoire of between-the-bread creations.
A daily special that intrigued me was a side salad of fresh roasted corn with lobster, tomatillos and red pepper in a lime-cilantro vinaigrette. A knockout, as it turned out. There had to be as much fresh lobster as there was corn in the 8-ounce container, which rang up at a ridiculous $2.99.
“To be honest, we didn’t make any money on that,” Cordaro later told me. “We just wanted to showcase that we do interesting stuff.”
There are no specials today, Monday, but there will be tomorrow through Friday. Cordaro still doesn’t know quite what. “Once I talk to the produce guy and ask what they have, we take it from there.”
So, let’s hear it for seasonality and the element of surprise, two ways Roast continues to live up to its three-star rating.
