The coffee beans at Sergi Coffee & Roast, which opened in West Babylon this week, have traveled 2,600-plus miles from Colombia to Sunrise Highway — but they don’t go far from roasting machine to cup.
Owner Ibrahim Sergi roasts the arabica beans on a Diedrich machine a few steps from the cafe’s front counter, where he serves a range of coffee drinks including latte, espresso, Americano, and cappuccino ($2-$5), plus 24-hour cold-brew and bracing Turkish coffee.
“I couldn’t find what I wanted, and decided to do something a bit different,” said Sergi, an Istanbul native who took several trips to Colombia, sampling dozens of beans, before he settled on a variety from the mountainous Cauca region.
Customers can sample his joe this Saturday, when Sergi will offer each customer a free brewed coffee to celebrate the grand opening of the seven-table cafe, which also offers Bigelow teas, soft drinks and pastries from Mr. Bill’s Cheesecakes in Lindenhurst and Jonathan Lord Cheesecakes and Desserts in Bohemia.
Sergi sells pound bags of his roasted beans in light, medium, and dark roasts, which he is also wholesaling to other Long Island eateries.
The coffee shop is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
