Free barbecue for Super Bowl Sunday? That offer did not make it to the goal line.

Al Horowitz, owner of Smokin’ Al’s Famous BBQ Joint in Bay Shore and Massapequa Park, has had to pull back from a proposal he made last week. On Monday, Jan. 23, Horowitz publicly announced that he would pay for all Super Bowl Sunday catering orders ranging from $200 to $500, tax included, should the Giants win the Super Bowl. The deadline for ordering was Thursday, Feb. 2, but Horowitz stopped taking orders Sunday evening, four days ahead of schedule.

“The response to this promotion has been overwhelming,” Horowitz said. “We have taken over $60,000 worth of orders for more than 300 parties between both locations.” That, Horowitz added, was as much as the two restaurants could handle in terms of physical space and production capability.

“I really regret I can’t make more people happy with this promotion,” Horowitz said.

Valerie McPartland of Massapequa, who was one of many turned away when she tried to get an order in on Monday at noon, was disappointed.  “I guess we knew this sounded too good to be true.”

Smokin' Al's Famous BBQ Joint is at 19 W. Main St. in Bay Shore, 631-206-3000, and 4847 Merrick Rd. in Massapequa Park, 516-799-4900.
