Syosset: Pizza meets BBQ at ex-Patsy's

What, you’ve never had a pulled pork sushi roll? What about a Buffalo chicken or barbecue shrimp roll? They go for $10 to $12 apiece at  Long Island’s latest (perhaps only) pizzeria/ barbecue house, a whole other culinary zone.

You may be familiar with the location as Patsy’s Pizzeria (remember the lawsuit by Patsy's Restaurant in Manhattan?). The place just this week metamorphosed into Dom & Luigi’s Smoke House.

At lunch, I found it booming. Can’t say I loved or hated the “sushi” (seaweed-wrapped rice and pulled pork in barbecue sauce). Each of the elements was fine in and of itself, but  the totality amounted to a  “when worlds collide” kind of experience.

A Margherita pizza would have been better had it arrived with its topping molten-hot rather than lukewarm; still, this was good pie. A problem arose when I tried to order ribs without sauce. No can do, I was told. The ribs turned out to be meaty, but the lack of discernible fat rendered them a bit dry under a coat of sauce that obliterated any hint of smokiness.

Menu items run the gamut from a “porker burger” (stuffed with smoked pork rib and topped with pulled pork, bacon and Cheddar) to eggplant parmigiana. It seems as though barbecue dishes are listed under the heading “Dom” while Italian fare goes under the “Luigi” label.

An intriguing place and definitely one to watch.

Dom & Luigi’s Smoke House BBQ Pizza Bar is at 407 Jericho Tpke., Syosset, 516-802-4125,
