At the Fancy Food Show last week, I chatted up the folks at Queens-based Tom Cat Bakery, who deliver their very good bread to many good Long Island restaurants. (In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the presence of Tom Cat bread is one of the most reliable indicators of a good restaurant.)
It turns out that Tom Cat’s sales manager, John Martinez, lives in Long Beach, and he directed me to The Bungalow, a casual, beach-themed eatery that, apparently, uses Tom Cat bread. I stopped by one morning for breakfast and had a terrific breakfast panino, the “Captain Jack,” a pressed sandwich containing a fried egg, bacon, Monterey Jack cheese and guacamole. It was all wonderfully Californian and perfectly delicious.
The menu at The Bungalow is vast, comprising scores of panini, burgers, wraps, quesadillas, kabobs, soups, salads, eggs and omelets, pancakes, smoothies and shakes. The tiki-bar-esque space has a few tables, a counter with stools, and a busy takeout business as well. My one quibble: Folks, it’s one panino, two panini.
