The Purple Elephant, situated in the Brittania Marina in Northport, just had a major renovation and has transformed itself from market cafe to full-fledged restaurant offering table service.
Chef David Intonato, who owns the place with his wife, Erin, said that the restaurant has a casual laid-back feel, with both indoor and outdoor seating — in front and in back — with a water view from the rear deck, as well as from the dining room.
Intonato, who previously was executive chef at the Mill Pond House in Centerport, said he sources meat and poultry from farms that raise their animals without antibiotics or hormones and, seasonally, gets his produce locally from KK's The Farm, a biodynamic farm in Southold. Many dishes on his menu are vegetarian and vegan.
On the lunch menu: a Thai green-papaya salad ($11), a rain forest burger made with quinoa and pinto beans ($12), a grilled tempeh Reuben sandwich with kimchee and a grilled grass-fed buffalo burger with yucca fries ($17).
On the dinner menu: steamed Prince Edward Island mussels with coconut curry sauce ($13), Mexican creamed corn ($10), kale salad ($13), achiote roasted chicken ($23), a Charleston summer shrimp stew ($23) and a vegan “mac attack” featuring fresh pasta with vegan sausage and a creamy vegan cheese sauce ($18).
The place serves craft beers and biodynamic wines.
