There's always a good reason to visit Snowflake in Riverhead and dive into some of Long Island's best ice cream. Now, you can add local strawberries.

East End farm stands are bursting with strawberries, earlier than usual.

At Snowflake, have them on a sundae, have them in a soda, have them straight, have them any way. Great fruit layered with some sugar makes the juice.

The only rival to the ice cream shop's yearly strawberry statement is when the fresh local peaches come in. You'll have to wait till deep summer for them.

Maybe you'll be up to here in berries after an afternoon at the 48th annual Mattituck Lions Club Strawberry Festival, which goes through Sunday. But a trip, post- or pre-, to sample the sweet ones at Snowflake is mandatory.

Snowflake, 1148 W. Main St., Riverhead; 631-727-4394.

Truth in advertising.
