Everyone who ate at Thomas's Ham 'n Eggery in Carle Place knew co-owner George Koukoulas, and Koukoulas seemed to know everyone who came through the door. A big man with a big personality, Koukoulas commanded the area behind the counter as both pundit and philosopher.

Koukoulas died Friday at age 53 as a result of heart failure. His brother, and the diner's managing partner, Thomas Koukoulas, said that he and his family were devastated by the loss, adding that although George seemed to be in the background at the diner, “he played a big part in the dynamic of who we were.“

For Thomas's regulars, it's going to be hard to see that counter without George behind it.

The diner is currently closed and scheduled to reopen on Wednesday. To read more about Koukoulas and view the full obituary, click here.

Thomas's Ham 'n Eggery is at 325 Old Country Rd., Carle Place, 516-333-3060
