Twin toilets in Sochi? Big deal. Tandem tinkling has been an event for more than a decade on Long Island.
When BBC reporter Steve Rosenberg tweeted a photograph of side-by-side thrones at the Winter Olympics cross-country skiing and biathlon center, it instantly went viral, though it turns out that the configuration isn’t all that unusual in Russia.
In the rest of the world, however, it’s usually one bowl per stall. Not, however, at the Shelter Island farm-to-table restaurant 18 Bay. The ladies’ room of the building’s previous tenant, Planet Bliss, boasted two pots. When 18 Bay’s Adam Kopels and Elizabeth Ronzetti took over in 2010, they left the distinctive arrangement in place.
Men are used to sharing their bathroom business. For women, it’s a chance to deepen the bonds of kinship or friendship, or to raise a new relationship to the next level. And if you run out of toilet paper, a helping hand is within easy reach.
