Union Cantina, the contemporary Mexican restaurant at a landmark Bowden Square address in Southampton, plans to add a burger bar to its repertoire on Jan. 17.
Union Burger Bar will specialize in gourmet burgers, hand-cut fries, milkshakes, craft beers, and small-batch bourbon. Executive chef Scott Kampf will oversee the two eateries, which are owned by Ian Duke.
The Bowden Square site is best remembered for Herb McCarthy's Bowden Square. Restaurateur McCarthy, in his trademark white jacket, owned and operated the celebrity magnet for 50 years,
Among the guests he hosted: Babe Ruth, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Ernest Hemingway, Irwin Shaw, Gary Cooper, and Hedy Lamarr. McCarthy sold the restaurant and retired in 1986. He died in 1990.
McCarthy's steak, seafood, and whiskey haunt was succeeded by other restaurants as well as the brewery Southampton Publick House.
Union Cantina's moderately priced menu includes a major burger, in addition to sliders, freshly made guacamole, assorted tacos, cast-iron fajitas, and marinated skirt steak.
The Union Burger Bar menu includes a $10.95 cheeseburger lunch special; appetizers, such as corn fritters, onion rings, macaroni and cheese, chicken wings, and fried pickles, $6.95 to $11.95; burgers, $14.95 to $17.95; fries, $4.95 to $10.95; salads and bowls, $8.95 to $15.95; milkshakes, $8; dessert shakes, $14; and build-your-own burgers. with choice of protein ($10.95 to $14), bun, toppings and sauces.
Union Burger Bar will be open Monday to Friday for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday for brunch, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday to Thursday for dinner, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., and 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday.
