Wednesday’s Table, a new breakfast-and-lunch restaurant in the former digs of the Piping Plover Cafe, has opened on Main Road in Southold. It’s a collaboration between two sisters, Lena Tanzi and Linh Trieu, who immigrated with their parents to the United States from Vietnam in 1979.
Trieu is the executive chef. A graduate of the Institute of Culinary Education, she cooked at Manhattan restaurants such as Bouley and Oceana before, most recently, working as a research chef for Fresh Direct. Trieu’s experience with both fine dining and home cooking can be seen in her menu. Sandwiches include banh mi, the great Vietnamese pork hoagie; mushroom-truffled grilled cheese, braised short ribs with cider-braised cabbage and eggplant Caprese melt. (Sandwiches are all less than $9.) For breakfast, Trieu makes five types of buttermilk biscuits ($2 to $2.50) in addition breakfast sandwiches such as chorizo and egg, and egg salad and bacon (both $5.95).
Tanzi, who splits her time between Peconic and Brooklyn, explained the derivation of the restaurant’s name: “It’s a tribute to our dad,” she said. “When we were growing up he worked so hard. His only day off was on Wednesday and that was the day he’d cook for the family. So the Wednesday table was very special to us.”
Accordingly, Wednesday’s Table is closed on Wednesdays. The other six days of the week it is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
