The Hofstra Cultural Center in Hempstead is hosting a conference celebrating the 50th anniversary of the New York Mets. The gathering continues through Sunday.

Former Mets Bud Harrelson, Ed Charles, Ed Kranepool, Art Shamsky and Rusty Staub are among the scheduled participants. For additional information: 516-463-5669.

If you're joining them, or just looking for a good meal not too far afield, here are a few hits up the middle.

Pastrami Plus is a heavy hitter for deli favorites, especially overstuffed sandwiches. Hot dogs, knishes, corned beef, brisket and, of course, pastrami. "The Brooklyn Dodger" includes hot pastrami, chopped chicken liver, coleslaw and Russian dressing. Pinch hitting: burgers, a vegetarian plate, more. $-$$

Jake's Steakhouse beefs up the lineup. The restaurant is across from Nassau University Medical Center. At lunch: wings, salads, burgers, sandwiches, steaks and chops. For dinner, try the raw bar, the porterhouse for two, T-bone, rib-eye, filet mignon, shell steak. Very good service, pleasant dining room. $$-$$$

Mama Theresa's, one of several on Long Island, leads off with appetizers such as fried calamari and clams oreganata, and continues with other Italian-American favorites. Plenty of hero sandwiches, pastas and personal "pizzettas." Tasty house-made lasagna, meat or vegetable. $-$$
