After the past two weeks, the idea of "comfort" food takes on more significance. Here are three spots where the homey fare is very good.
The Bayou in North Bellmore brings some big Cajun flavors to the table. It's a casual eatery that features Vidalia onion rings, "ragin' " Cajun calamari with hot sauce, much mellower shrimp and grits, pan-fried catfish, chipotle-fueled barbecue pork pie and fired-up "el diablo" steak or crawfish.
Cedar Creek American Bar and Grill in Glen Cove has a lively vibe to go with its fine, colorful, eclectic menu. Some winners: pulled-pork sliders, fried oysters, fish and chips, Cuban sandwich, fish tacos, burgers, braised short ribs, chicken potpie and, on Sundays, Southern-fried chicken.
Matteo's in Huntington stands out with hearty, Italian-American dishes and an easygoing manner. Tasty choices include rigatoni with meat sauce; meatballs and sausages; chicken "Angelina" with onions, peppers, peas and potatoes; shrimp marinara; escarole with garlic and olive oil; lobster fra diavolo, warm mozzarella with red peppers and asparagus, chicken scarpariello.
