What caught my eye was the sign on a little strip mall takeout-with-tables in West Babylon. It promised Costa Rican food, something beyond rare on Long Island. Then, there was the name of the place: Sexy Chickens Firehouse.
Curious, I stopped in for lunch with a friend. We ordered, from the roster of Costa Rican specialties, the jerk chicken ($6.99) and a special of pork stew ($6.99). While the chicken had a bit of kick, it was hacked into bony pieces and boasted very little meat. The pork, while decent enough, was stingily portioned. Serviceable rice and beans accompanied. Best was the pressure-fried chicken, which was skinless, crisply crusted and very juicy, if a bit salty. And — hoorah! — I was able to get all dark meat ($1.25 a piece).
Sexy Chickens Firehouse is at 84 Rte. 109, West Babylon; 631-482-8707.
