After launching the early-summer mash-up the Mac n’ Cheetos in June, Burger King unveils the Whopperito this week, with the burger-burrito combo on sale at participating restaurants beginning August 15.

The limited-run Whopper in a burrito starts with a flour tortilla stuffed with spice-dressed beef layered with tomatoes, onions, lettuce and pickles drizzled with queso sauce for $2.99 or $4.99 as a combo meal.

“We’re infusing classic American fare with Tex-Mex flare,” said Alex Macedo, president of Burger King, North America, in a news release. The Whopperito was originally conceived by a franchisee and was tested in Hermitage, Pennsylvania in June.

This isn’t the first time Burger King has edged into Chipotle territory with a burrito. In May, Burger King introduced the Egg-Normous Burrito ($3.49), a two-handed number stuffed with sausage, bacon, eggs, hash browns, and Cheddar and American cheeses.

A major player in the fast food wars — an intense competition among McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Subway and others — Florida-based Burger King was founded in 1954. Today, Burger King can be found in every state and 100 countries.
