WildFeast Foods has opened in Long Beach, a promising new hyper-local restaurant from siblings Mirijana and Valentino Ujkic, originally from Montenegro. Their restaurant, formerly WildFeast at Riis, has about 20 seats in what had been The Currywurst Company.
Mirijana has lived in Long Beach since 2010 and recently convinced her brother Valentino to move back from Denver, where he had been the executive chef at Trattoria Stella. Before that, he worked at Mario Batali’s Del Posto in Manhattan under head chef Mark Ladner.
Open for breakfast, brunch and dinner, the restaurant, which had a yearlong residence in Rockaway’s Riis Park Beach Bazaar last year, showcases seafood from fishermen based in Island Park and Point Lookout, as well as produce during the growing season from the WildFeast farm, a private plot on the North Fork.
For breakfast, served daily from 7 to 11:30 a.m., look for sandwiches such as a double smoked bacon, egg and Cheddar, smoked salmon with whipped cream cheese, pickled onions and capers or steak and eggs ($4.50 to $9.50).
The lunch and dinner menus range from the WildFeast wedge salad or roasted pears and chestnuts to Long Island clam chowder ($8 to $15). Snacks include cod cheeks, baked cherrystone clams, chicken wings and calamari ($8 to $14). Sandwiches show off seafood in the lobster roll, fried hake on brioche and Montauk monkfish. Landlubbers might prefer the grilled chicken and herb goat cheese sandwich or roasted turkey with Cornelian cherry on a baguette. Lunch and dinner sandwiches range from $9 to $15.
Specials include in-season diver scallops wrapped in house-smoked bacon with rosemary-roasted potatoes, fish and chips, pan-seared hake fillet and miso-glazed monkfish tails ($16 to $20).
WildFeast Foods offers eat-in, takeout and delivery. It’s open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
