In Montauk, it's the times of wurst.
Zum Schneider, the East Village biergarten, has opened a sudsy branch in the former site of Oyster Pond Restaurant & Bar. It deserves a toast, preferably with a brew from Hofbrauhaus Traunstein.
Zum Schneider MTK arrives as a buoyant Bavarian-style beer hall, with hearty German food to match. Share a bench at one of the long tables. And try the Bavarian soft pretzel with mustard, sliced white radish with cheese and pickles, and the platter of weisswurst, smoked beef sausage and wiener, with potato salad and sauerkraut.
Dinnertime dishes include Montauk bass marinated in smoked beer, roasted pork shoulder in dark-beer gravy, sauerbraten, and a platter for six or eight diners that includes grilled and boiled sausages, smoked pork chop, pork belly, plus 'kraut, roasted potatoes and three mustards.
Wash it all down with beer: wheat, dark and doppelbock, lager, Pilsener, all on tap. There are bottled beers, too.
